95% of children in DC’s foster care system are African American. 93% of the families DC127 serves are African American. We recognize that in order to serve these children and families well, we (especially white volunteers and foster families) must be allies and work towards racial justice.
DC127 is partnering with Service Never Sleeps to bring a half-day workshop around what it means to be an ally to marginalized communities. With a focus on racial justice and fighting racism, the workshop establishes “Allyship” as an active way of life that exercises bridge-building to ensure equality, opportunity, and inclusion for everyone. Referencing the “CLAIM” acronym as the basis for an Allyship lifestyle, the workshop teaches individuals about the causes of social injustice, how to be effective allies for marginalized communities, and how to actively influence and educate others.
The workshop will cost $27 which will go towards a box lunch from Panera and the cost of the speaker. If cost or childcare is a barrier to your participation, please contact Chrissy (firstname.lastname@example.org). Full scholarships are available, but you can also self-select a 50% scholarship by adding the code ALLY.
Please feel free to invite friends, church members, or partners. All are welcome!
